Misery and the Miserable

Description

This is for a non-Madoka character of mine who I decided to go ahead and dick around with in a Madoka AU roleplay. :') His name is Dragan, and it's important to keep in mind that his nationality is Serbian, as a lot of Serbian themes play into the warlock (?) design. WHOO, HISTORY.

The text is pretty damn hard to read, so here you go:

Name: Lazar [A reference to a certain very important Lazar of Serbia. An important note is that Lazar translates to “God has Helped”, a subtle reference to the popular belief that religion is the cause of conflict in the ex-YU. In fact, religion has very little to do with it, but even Dragan himself has bought into the lie.]

Type: Nostalgia Warlock

Nature: War

Description: A nostalgic warlock. Lazar can no longer move forward. He sticks to the pain of his past, attacking all who disturb his misery.

Minions

Murad [The name is a reference to Lazar’s enemy who also died on the battlefield, Sultan Murad.]

Duty: Remembering

Description: A familiar whose duty is to remember Lazar’s past battles. He never lies.

Vlatko [A reference to a commander of additional troops who helped Lazar on the battle field. ~He also looks like his fiance~.]

Duty: Singing

Description: A familiar whose duty is to sing the glories of days gone by. He embellishes the truth.

Some more of the symbolism explained: the marks on Dragan’s chest are the four Cs/Ss. Stands for [translated] “Only Unity Saves the Serbs” and is used pretty much anywhere a Serb has set foot. All of the bird imagery corresponds to the double headed eagle, and eagles period, the national symbol. The red face actually incorporates some Montenegrin elements—the red on the cronagosrka kapa stands for the fallen Serb soldiers at the Battle of Kosovo Polje. Guns and war imagery are both from the reputation the Serbians have of being war mongers and the fact that Serbia has the second amount of guns per capita in the goddamn world. Crown imagery—it was a monarchy, pretty obvious. The snake minion comes from the fact that the snake is a sacred animal in Serbia. The wheat in the background comes from the wide wheat plains of Vojvodina, and the patterns are from traditional Serbian cloth. The crumbling building is an actual destroyed building from the 90s bombing of Belgrade.

WHEW, WE AIN’T DONE YET

So I heard somewhere that Madoka witches may have been based off of tarot cards, which sent me into a whole nother level of OH SHIT to go and find a card I could layer onto this design.

The result: he is The Chariot. Upright, it represents moving forward conquering obstacles. Reversed, it represents the stalling of movement, being mired in the past, and completely, utterly trapped without motivation.

RUHRUHRUH TL;DR I THINK TOO DEEPLY ABOUT THESE.

PS: Does anyone know a good group on dA that allows PMMM OCs because I really want to put this stuff into action. .3.

It'seems incredible! I like this design so much because I have very similar design of a witch in my head) some details fit my best friend who my witch is based on. I find your design rather pleasant and interesting.
